Ten Traffic Fatalities in Missouri-Thanksgiving Weekend

Tragic Deaths Due to Car Crashes Leave 10 Dead and Several Others Seriously Injured

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there were 10 road fatalities across the state of Missouri. The 10 fatalities represent the number of fatal crashes worked by the MSHP and do not include fatalities worked by local municipalities. The holiday counting period began Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. on November 23 and continued through Midnight of Sunday, November 27, 2016.

According to the MSHP, there were 400 traffic crashes across the state and 124 of them resulted in injuries. Troopers arrested 103 people for driving while intoxicated and made 100 drug busts over the weekend.

In 2013, there were eight fatalities, 15 road fatalities in 2014, and nine in 2015. Thanksgiving holiday hours do not vary from year to year as do other holiday counting periods such as Christmas and Fourth of July.

Wednesday, November 23

A 16 year-old Odessa girl was killed in a crash on Johnson Drive in Lafayette County, after her car traveled off the roadway, returned to the roadway, traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting the driver.

Thursday, Thanksgiving

No fatal crashes were reported on Thursday which is a reason to give thanks.

Friday, November 25

A 37 year old St. Louis woman was killed Friday evening just before 9 p.m. According to reports, her 2008 Honda Fit was on its passenger side in the left lane, facing east, on northbound Interstate 55 after a previous crash when the driver of a 2010 Dodge Charger attempted to brake and swerve when the car struck the roof of the Honda. The driver of the Charger was a 23 year old O’Fallon, Missouri woman with reported minor injuries.

Around 11 p.m., a 17 year-old Kearney male was killed when his car traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a road sign and tree. The young man was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram truck and the crash occurred on Plattsburg Road north of 162nd Street.

Saturday, November 26th

At approximately 12:30 p.m., a 68 year-old Arkansas man was killed after his 2007 Ford Explorer ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned multiple times on U.S. 63 south of Brandsville.

At 1:00 p.m., an 80 year-old Paris, Missouri man was killed when his vehicle failed to yield to a train and the vehicle came to rest off the side of the railroad tracks. The Paris man was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado.

Wrong Way Crash on Interstate 44

A Texas mother and her toddler were killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 44.Around 4 a.m., a vehicle driven by a 26 year-old Sullivan, Missouri man was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-44. The front left corner of his vehicle struck the left front corner of a 2004 Saab, The young man was driving a Toyota Sienna and it then traveled off the left side of the roadway and came to rest in the median cables. The Saab traveled off the right side of the roadway where it came to rest.

The Sullivan man was killed in the crash. The Saab was carrying seven people all from Texas, two were fatally injured including the 32 year old female driver and a two-year toddler. Several of the Saab passengers were seriously injured varying in ages from age 22 to 39. As well, the age of one passenger seriously injured was not immediately identifiable. No reason was given as to why the Toyota was traveling the wrong-way on the interstate.

According to reports, all occupants in the Saab were wearing seatbelts.

Sunday, November 27th

One person was killed and two more injured in a one-vehicle accident in St. Francois County on Route E at Raintree at approximately 10 p.m. The vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned. A passenger was killed and another seriously injured. The driver is reported as having moderate injuries.

A 37 year-old Lexington, Missouri man was killed in a one-vehicle crash at 3:50 a.m. in Oak Grove, Missouri. The crash occurred as the vehicle crossed over the westbound lane and traveled into the ditch, overturned and came to rest on its top in the roadway.
