Prevention Checklist for ATV Use

By | November 4, 2020 | Motorcycle Accidents, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

Children make up a disproportionate number of all-terrain vehicle injuries for various reasons, such as lack of adult supervision, failure to wear a helmet, and riding a vehicle that is too large for the child. With the increase in ATV popularity, there has been a growing concern over the risks involved in riding ATVs. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that ATVs result in more than 100,000 emergency room visits per year, including more than 30,000 injuries for children under 16. There are several suggestions for preventing ATV accidents:

  • Attend an ATV driver’s safety course
  • Never use a 3-wheeler as they are unsafe and no longer manufactured
  • Ride an age-appropriate ATV. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that no one under the age of 16 rides a full-size ATV
  • Provide constant supervision when children are operating an ATV
  • Never carry passengers. ATVs are designed for only one person
  • Do not use ATVs on the streets or at night
  • Always wear an approved, well-fitting helmet with eye protection
  • Wear non-skid, closed-toe shoes
  • Wear long pants and long sleeves
  • Never operate an ATV under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Even under the most cautious of operating situations, accidents happen. When accidents happen for reasons of negligence, you must consider contacting a personal injury attorney. Serious injuries, including body fractures, spinal cord injuries, disfigurement, and traumatic brain damage, can result from an ATV accident.

If you have suffered an injury in a motorcycle accident in or around St. Louis, Missouri, it’s in your best interest to consult an attorney at The Cagle Law Firm as soon as possible to discuss your legal rights and options.
