According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration statistics, approximately 40 million people are operating motor vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Missouri and Illinois were states that indicated a significant increase or decrease. The study indicated that 30 million people in the U.S. drove drunk, and 10 million were drugged. An average of 13.2 percent of people age 16 and older drove under the influence of alcohol, and 43 percent drove under the influence of an illegal drug. It was shown that younger drivers were more likely to drive impaired, with drivers 16-25 with the highest rate of drunk driving.
Of all the 50 states, 12 states had a reduction in drunk driving, and credit is given to information about the dangers of drinking and driving and law enforcement of the law. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Fatal Accident Report System, one in three fatal car accidents was reported to be related to an illegal drug.
While the numbers may be dropping a small percentage, alcohol and drug use combined with driving are still far too high.
