According to the SaveMoLives.com site of in the spirit of the Arrive Alive campaign, they advise not to drive if you’re tipsy, buzzed, or blitzen. As our holiday calendars are crammed with social festivities and family/social gatherings, we all will probably consume more alcohol. The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety reminds all motorists to designate a driver or call a cab and avoid driving impaired. I have frequently blogged and issued press releases in an attempt to raise awareness about driving under the influence.
Law enforcement is on the lookout for impaired drivers and will be targeting efforts through the holidays. During Thanksgiving travel, I noticed 6 highway patrol cars in a one-mile period on my drive down Interstate 44. But keeping drunk or buzzed drivers is not just the responsibility of patrol officers. Each of us must be responsible for our own sobriety or making sure we plan a safe way to travel after partying. “Drinking and driving is never a good combination. It’s just not worth the risk,” says Leanna Depue, executive chair of the coalition. “If you are going to drink, plan another way home before the celebration begins, and encourage your friends and family to do the same.”
Throughout December, safety advertising in restaurants and bars will remind patrons to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”. As well, they have developed a sign to hang in restroom posters, mirror clings, and drink coasters with Santa’s reindeer, “Don’t Drive if You’re Tipsy, Buzzed or Blitzen.”
There are no excuses for drinking and driving. It is a fact that drinking and driving are a lethal combination. The above signs and sayings are creative reminders to do the right thing. The consequences of drinking and driving can be devastating and include fines, jail time, injuries, and death. In December of 2011, 67 people died, and 456 were seriously injured in Missouri traffic crashes. Seventeen of those fatalities and 69 of those seriously injured involved an impaired driver.
